Working Conditions For Garment Industry

One expert said that the rights of hundreds of thousands of workers in the Bangladesh garment industry need to be further improved. Bangladesh clothing industry is mostly women workers, working in a harmful environment that is hazardous to health and safety, with long hours and low wages.

Bangladesh human rights organization Odhikar member Ahmed Ziauddin said in an interview, Bangladesh

An average of 12 hours a day, at least 6 days a week, if the emergency rush out of the goods, sometimes the working time will be longer.

According to Dr. Ziauddin, theoretically, they should get overtime pay, but they didn't get it.

"Labor conditions are still in a bad situation in many ways".

When asked about the recent unrest in Bangladesh's clothing industry, the canal stressed that the workers in Bangladesh clothing industry worked hard to get a salary of only $50 a month, and the wage they demanded was nearly $100.

But Dr. Ziauddin said Bangladesh's clothing business owners - the most powerful group in Bangladesh - have 37 members in the parliament of Mongo, so when labour groups try to advocate legislation to raise wages and improve working conditions, "owners will block them from within."

Dr. Ziauddin said Bangladesh.

It is extremely important for the economic development of Bangladesh. However, because of the poor safety conditions in the working environment, there are numerous fire accidents and other accidents, and the labor rights of the garment workers are not guaranteed.

"In Bangladesh's processing export area, there is no right to organize trade unions, nor do we have the right to organize trade unions in the garment industry. We think this is a fundamental right expressly stipulated in our constitution, but the garment industry generally does not have the right, because the owners are not interested."

When asked about foreign countries

enterprise

When the role is played, Dr. Ziauddin said that a number of enterprises, such as the French retailer Carrefour, usually own their own storefront, so that they can actually control all aspects, and then affect the production plant.

The labor conditions of large foreign enterprises seem to be relatively good, with a slight increase in wages, and some enterprises provide free lunch for employees, improving their working conditions and working facilities, the canal said.

But Dr. Ziauddin stressed that these conditions "are not standard practices, they are exceptions rather than routines."

We also do not believe that these big foreign companies exert enough pressure to require Bangladesh garment manufacturers to comply with specific standards.

However, under the tremendous pressure from consumers in rich countries, they have been very strict in compliance with child labor norms. However, the reality is that it is very difficult to prove whether someone is 14 or 16 years old.

Dr. Ziauddin said that because of the small number of labour inspectors, it is impossible to monitor whether thousands of garment factories comply with the relevant norms.
