14 Brand Clothing NPE

Recently, an international environmental protection organization released a report on the investigation of toxic and harmful substances residues in the clothing brand of the world.

The report pointed out that Adidas, Lining and other international and domestic well-known brands of products contain "environmental hormone" nonylphenol polyoxyethylene ether (NPE).

The report immediately aroused public concern.

What harm does NPE do to human body?

How many products contain NPE?

How do Adidas and other companies respond to this?

Three brand "annihilated completely"

Zhang Kai, director of the pollution and control project of the organization, introduced 78 samples of 15 clothing brands in 18 countries including China, Britain and Argentina from April to May this year, including sportswear, casual wear and footwear.

The origin of these samples involves 13 Chinese, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and so on.

"We sent these samples to a qualified third party laboratory test. The results showed that 2/3 samples including Adidas were detected with NPE, and 14 samples were detected for NPE samples."

Zhang Kai said.

According to the report, the 14 brands are Adidas, Lining, Nike, CalvinKlein, CONVERSE, G-StarRAW, H&M, Kappa, crocodile, Abercombie&Fitch, Puma, RalphLauren, UNIQLO and YOUNGOR.

Among them, 4 samples of Lining, 3 samples of YOUNGOR and 3 samples of Abercombie&Fitch were all detected NPE, three "annihilated" brand.

What exactly is NPE?

What harm does it do?

Professor Dong Yanming, School of materials, Xiamen University, said that NPE is a very important non-ionic surfactant. It has good wetting, emulsifying, dispersing, decontamination and antistatic properties, and has good performance against hard water.

It is widely used in detergent, textile, pesticide, paint, leather, building materials, paper making and other industries.

NPE is a polymer, not itself.

Dangerous goods

However, NPE can react to produce nonylphenol (NP) under certain conditions of natural environment.

It is an endocrine disruptor and carcinogen. It is known as "environmental hormone". Once it is discharged into the environment, it will exist in the environment for a long time and can enter the food chain.

Therefore, if the relevant enterprises use NPE, their wastewater will threaten the environment and human health.

"Experiments have shown that when the concentration of NP reaches 0.02 milligrams per liter, that is a very small concentration, it can inhibit the development of the male seminal vesicle and promote the feminization of the male fish."

Zhang Kai said, "it can enter the food chain and magnify it step by step, thereby threatening us."

China has not yet restricted its use.

Because of the harmfulness of NPE and NP to human body and environment, the EU promulgated the "REACH regulation" in 2005 (that is, chemicals registration, evaluation, licensing and restriction regulations), which is the EU's preventive management of all chemicals entering the market. The regulation was formally implemented in June 1, 2007.

The regulation prohibits the use of NPE and NP in textile production.

At the beginning of this year, the Chinese government added NPE and NP to the catalogue of toxic chemicals that China strictly restricted imports and exports.

"But China has not yet used NPE and NP in China.

Issue corresponding regulations

"Zhang Kai said," that is to say, in the production of China's textile industry, there is no restriction on the use of NPE and NP.

ADI Lining responds to questions

In the evening of August 23rd, Adidas issued a statement that the test results mentioned in the report showed that Adidas's NPE concentration was far below the target value. Most of the Adidas products detected did not detect NPE (5 of the 9 samples tested did not contain NPE).

Adidas has strictly adhered to the NPE concentration of 100ppm standard, which is the best measure in the industry.

Adidas said that since 1998, the group began implementing the "harmful substances restriction policy" aimed at improving the environmental impact of the supply chain.

In addition, Adidas also said that in mid June, there was a report that Adidas, a Chinese supplier of Ningbo YOUNGOR group, was discharging pollutants into nearby rivers.

Adidas group has launched an investigation.

It has been proved that the current cooperative relationship between Adidas group and YOUNGOR group is limited to tailoring and sewing of garments, and does not involve the use of fabrics and the possible use of dyes and chemicals, and water treatment processes.

In August 24th, Li Ning Co released Li Ning Co's statement on products in line with EU REACH standards on its official website, saying that all products comply with EU standards.

The statement said that the NPE content of the 4 Lining products examined in the report was in line with the EU's standard of less than 0.1%.

However, this statement was questioned by the issuer of the report.

"We think Li Ning Co misread the regulations."

Zhang Kai said, "the limit of NPE concentration in the REACH regulations is not limited to the final product, but to the chemical reagents used in production." 0.1%

In the survey, 4 brands of Lining's clothing were detected with NPE residues, one of which was 680 mg / kg.

This indicates that the toxic and harmful substances such as NPE are used and discharged in the production of Lining garments and pollute the rivers. "
