Nike Set Up Sweatshops Overseas Or Become A Fact.
Recently, after 11 months of negotiations with trade unions, they were known for their sweatshops.
Nike
The company was forced to pay about $1 million overtime overtime to some 4500 workers in a Nike plant in Wan Dan Province, Indonesia.
There are public opinion that this may trigger new demands for wage increases across Indonesia and spread to other internationally renowned.
brand
Factories in Indonesia.
As early as the 90s of last century, Nike was notorious for setting up sweatshops and child labor overseas. For this reason, Nike was forced to put forward a series of improvement measures. Some people in academic circles also wrote praises Nike for its brand reputation.
Administration
Progress on this.
But how much progress has been made in Nike over the years, the The Associated Press disclosed in July 2011 that workers who produced CONVERSE sports shoes in Indonesia (Nike owned the brand) said supervisors had thrown shoes and slapped on them, abusing them as dogs, pigs and monkeys, calling workers who did not finish their work on time to the scorching sun, and in general, workers who had disclosed such cases to the media would be dismissed.
A common way for multinational companies to fight wage increases is to jointly manage and educate workers, and the two is to move factories to poorer areas and poorer countries, including moving to remote locations, traffic jolts, and no trade unions in mountainous areas. The factories of these proud international famous companies have been willing to avoid their "Shanzhai" in order to avoid supervision and reduce their wages.
To a large extent, globalization means that multinational companies are running around the world to find cheaper labor. They settle down in poor areas and create a standardized product workshop which is isolated from local society.
People in poor areas undoubtedly welcome foreign investment and job opportunities outside the country, and even endure initial slavery in the primitive accumulation period of capitalism.
But globalization means not only the globalization of capitalists' profit making places, but also the globalization of information and ideas, the increasing awareness of the rights and struggles of sweatworkers, the common occurrence of inflation and the yearning for better quality of life, making the development mode of alliance between capital and government (such as the development mode of the Indonesian Suharto era) faces more and more challenges.
However, when people in western countries opposed the exploitation and rule of "1%" against "99%" in the street, the resistance of workers in poor countries to billionaires and their government allies was less like Carnival activities, but bloody and risky.
During the Suharto administration in Indonesia, a number of workers' leaders were found in the river. More workers were arrested and sent to prison.
As the "father of construction" in Indonesia, Suharto is a firm ally of the new classical liberalism in the West. His autocratic rule has become a rare "good environmental factor" in the "market rule" and "enterprise management".
Even in the post Suharto era, the Indonesian government addicted to the goal of becoming a global economic power is willing to provide low labor costs and low environmental standards for foreign capital.
Investment
Environmental Science.
Capitalists regard labour as a tool for making profits, and the "development oriented government" regards labour as a tool to build a powerful country.
The bodies and lives of the workers who are maimed are the paved roads for these ambitious goals.
In 1997, Michael Moore launched the The Big One, which exposes Nike's violation of labor rights, and molded Nike President Phil Nate as the image spokesman of the blood sucking capitalist. The latter explained that Nike used low wage labor in Indonesia because Americans did not want to sew shoes.
People will find that in the high-end brand shops of prosperous commercial street in developed countries, they are often flooded with sweaty products from developing countries.
This is because the sale of goods in modern society is paying more and more attention to advertising. If we want to become high-end brand names, we can not help increasing the cost of advertising. Therefore, the more high-grade brand products are, the more we need to produce in sweatshops of developing countries.
In its No Logo book, Naomi Klein has made a sharp criticism of the brand oriented consumer culture and the marketing operation of large companies. Nike is an example of unethical company in the book.
The whirlwind sign of Nike and the bold and unrestrained performance of superstars in basketball, soccer and track and field in Nike commercials make the Nike brand equal to the cool life.
But young people in developed countries do not know much about the story of sweatshops in developing countries. Even if they know, they are, after all, the experiences of other distant countries.
Since Nike set up sweatshops overseas, there have been consumer actions against Nike products in the United States. However, in December 2011, a large number of Americans were trying to buy Nike's Air Jordan antique shoes, which led to a police arrest. It shows that Nike has stable consumer groups in the United States. These consumers even include teenagers playing basketball in the slums.
Although Nike refused to disclose how much compensation the company paid to its advertising stars, there are many sources of survey reports that Michael Jordan can get tens of millions of dollars in endorsement revenue from Nike every year, which is much more than that of all workers in an Indonesian Nike factory.
In 1845, Engels published the state of the working class in Britain.
Now that globalization has spread the similar scenes of Engels to the whole world, Marx and Engels will still have realistic value for the inferences about class struggle made against the social economic and political situation at that time.
Next, we may hear that Nike has closed and moved a factory somewhere in a certain country. To a considerable extent, the escape of the villain capital should be affirmed. This is the result of workers' conscious struggle.
The temporary sacrifice of workers can give rise to the improvement of the whole environment of rights and interests. When this concept comes into being, the working class as a whole can really be born. As E.P. Thompson said, what is class? Not only from the relationship with production data, but also from the "relationship and process", the collective action process with resistance will produce class.
